How To Write An Informal Letter (GCSE/ IGCSE)

Do you find it hard to write informal letters? Or are you just here for a quick reminder? Then this is the place for you! I hope you will find this article useful. Without further ado, let's get started.

STRUCTURE OF AN INFORMAL LETTER:

The structure of an informal letter is shown below:

To summarise;
  • Address and date is written on the left.
  • Address your recipent with "Dear...", followed by their first name/ nickname.
  • You can end your letter with 'Best wishes', 'With love', and so on.
Some of you may recognise the differences between informal and formal letters (covered in another article).

AN EXAMPLE OF INFORMAL WRITING:

PROMPT: You are asked to write a letter to your friend, to tell her about your vacation in Italy. Start your letter with "Dear...."

Dear Jane,

I know it has been a while, and I'm sorry I didn't contact you earlier. It's just that the post doesn't come here that often. So the vacation is amazing, we're staying in a cute little town in Italy. There is so much to see and I absolutely love the food! It is so good! Anyway, I hope you are fine.

With Love,
Helen

TIPS:

  • Don't use abbreviations or slang in your exam; you don't have to be that informal.
  • You do not need to write addresses if the question asks you to start your letter with "Dear [Name]".
